Stories as medicine was the first form of healing I found in this lifetime and is where the heart of my Service lies. As a sensitive child growing up in a cold, cruel, emotionally broken and dysfunctional family environment I found solace, hope, and strength in the power of stories as medicine. I resonated heavily with both Dorothy of “The Wizard of Oz” and Lucy from “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” and the other “Chronicles of Narnia” books. I so wished that like them I could be taken out of the drab, depressing, lifeless monotony of established order and everyday life into a world of wonder, Magick, and empowerment.
Stories are medicine and they are powerful tools which is why we have watched Hollywood impose on society through the subconscious tool of storytelling the divisive morals and guilt/shame-based disempowering belief systems that it has in order to keep us “manageable” or enslaved without literal shackles or bars. The power of stories as medicine can also and is now being utilized to help humanity rewrite our story to one of hope, consciousness, empowerment, and Co-Creation instead.
Traditionally storytelling was a sacred art and its practitioners were honored and revered for the radical integrity of their word. This is still true today with many indigenous people and their shamans who are the storytellers or Wisdom Keepers as they are known. This is evidence of the level of spiritual warriorship and Service necessary to perform this task with authenticity and devoid of ego for the greater good.
The stories we tell ourselves are the ones we create in our lives whether they are conscious or not. Journaling is a powerful way to observe the stories we are telling ourselves and the beliefs that give them power. Acknowledgement or having our story/voice heard is the beginning of changing our stories. This is Big Medicine.
Poetry is another form of storytelling that has transformational power. There is safety in the written word when we can not find our voice and magically beauty, grace, and an expanded perspective are a by-product. Personally, I have found that my best poems have come from my deepest wounds and greatest challenges and I believe this to be true for all. The writing of my memoirs has unleashed a whole new level of acceptance, compassion, forgiveness, and strength that has inspired me to create this website as a resource for the healing of individuals, humanity, and the planet.
Let us all utilize the power of stories as medicine as we rewrite a new, Higher-Vibrational Story for ourselves and each “other” on Mother Earth.
